Xu Nan is a Class 1 Registered Architect, the founder of NAN Architects, Assoc. AIA. He holds a Master of Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he completed his studies with the full-tuition “Morgenstern Scholar” scholarship, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the School of Architecture at Harbin Institute of Technology. His prior experience at Atelier Deshaus (Shanghai), SOM (Chicago), and 10Design (Shanghai/Hong Kong) has shaped a research-driven design approach that integrates technical insight with cultural sensitivity.
Xu’s architectural practice centers on the integration of architecture, structure, and technology, emphasizing innovative methods that shape public experience and spatial culture. He believes architecture should transcend functional boundaries to become a cultural medium—linking engineering precision, material intelligence, emotional resonance, and collective memory. His projects span educational, public, and residential buildings, as well as bridges and urban infrastructure, continually exploring how architecture can generate new relationships among city, community, and ecology. His teaching at the China Academy of Art, Tongji University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University extends this philosophy by cultivating students’ perceptual awareness, empathy, and critical thinking within the design process.
Xu has received numerous international design honors, including the American Architecture MasterPrize “Best of Best” in 2019 and 2023, the Iconic Awards “Best of Best” in 2021, and the First Prize of the Chongqing Excellent Engineering Survey and Design Awards in the same year. He was awarded the Jinwa Award Chief Jury Prize in 2022 and the OPAL Platinum Award in 2023. In 2024, he won “China Young Architects Award” by the authoritative academic journal UED. His work has been widely featured in leading domestic and international media and academic publications, including ArchDaily, Designboom, Gooood, Time + Architecture, and UED.
